See You Again (Time Already Knows) - Extra Part 1

Extra - That Hidden Love - Part 1

One month later.

There was a new bouquet of flowers in Shi Jian’s hospital room. The vibrant and fresh tulips were placed onto the white wooden flower rack by the floor-to-ceiling window. It was bathed in the afternoon sunshine in the corner, which made it look particularly elegant.

The flowers were from someone that the Yi Mao Group sent over. There was even a blessing copied from a government official written on the card: “Madam Ye, get well soon!” The signature said: Yi Mao Group.

After Shi Jian woke up, there was an endless stream of flowers and gifts sent to her everyday. Auntie Li liked to pick a few to display on the flower rack across from her bed to increase the color and vitality in the room. But Ye Jiacheng didn’t like to have too many flowers on display in the hospital room. He was strict about the types of flowers sent. Flowers with too much pollen were not allowed in the hospital room.

Also, Shi Jian only learned after she woke up that Yi Pei was also a victim in the NE8904 aviation accident, as well the fact that he was a fortunate survivor. Ten years of a harmonious and fantastical dream. Everything returned to the way it used to be. The ten years of memories inside her brain seemed to exist like the memory of a dream once she opened her eyes.

In the world before her eyes, Mr.Ye personally took care of her. Everyday, he told her about some interesting things, consciously improving her mental state to free her from the trauma of the plane accident. The thirty-five year old Ye Jiacheng still had a young face. He had smooth and slender eyebrows, long and delicate eyelashes, a high nose bridge…… The only difference was that there were extra smile lines around his eyes, which better suited a man’s charm. The gaze with which he looked at her was warm and familiar.

In the beginning, Shi Jian was still a bit disoriented. Occasionally, she stared at Mr.Ye and couldn’t look away. Mr.Ye smiled then, and lowered his head and poked her forehead. He quietly called to her: “Wife……”

The quiet and gentle call of “wife” carried the emotion of someone who’d lost something and regained it. He and her had the same feeling. They were both feeling it difficult to imagine that they had this happiness that was almost like a favor to them. Tears inadvertently flowed out of Shi Jian’s eyes. Mr.Ye brushed away her tears, then kissed her eyelids, her cheek, the corner of her lips, just like how he used to comfort her after she was frightened.

Her tears flowed even faster.

The Mr.Ye in front of her was real. Only, she still remembered the scene where Ye Jiacheng left her in despair. He had wanted her to wait no longer. Did this count as her getting what she waited for? Shi Jian reached out and Mr.Ye held her hand. It was a warm and tight grip. It reminded her of the warmth they had all the time in her deepest memories, how she could miss him at any moment, as if a turbulent wave swept into her heart.

When Yi Pei woke up, the Yi Mao Group had a new press conference. For a while, there was an overwhelming amount of news reports on it. The Yi Mao stocks that were in a slump continued to rise. Yi Pei still hadn’t left the hospital. Everyday, many news reporters waited outside the hospital for new information.

Shi Jian could already get out of bed. She sat on a sofa in her room and watched the news conference. Yi Pei was not present, but there was a photo of Yi Pei taken after he woke up. Yi Pei had never had a moment where he looked improper. Even though he had a serious medical emergency, in the photo, he was still wearing a formal suit with his powerful presence. The photo was provided by a reporter who interviewed him. In the face of the interview, Yi Pei’s expression was grim, and his gaze was calm. He looked just like how she remembered, but there were still a few differences.

At a glance at the television screen, Shi Jian couldn’t help but be a little bewildered. Did she really know Yi Pei?

Shi Jian was dazed on the sofa in the hospital room. When Ye Jiacheng came inside, the Yi Mao press conference on the television had already ended and other news was being broadcast. Important news about society was broadcast one after another with very articulate pronunciation.

“Watching the news?” Mr.Ye walked over with a smile. He looked from her face down to her legs and smiled, “You’ve slept so long that other than replenishing nutrients, you also have to catch up to the news so that you can keep up with the footsteps of society, right?”

Mr.Ye’s tone and expression was relaxed. Shi Jian looked at Ye Jiacheng. Her gaze landed on his hair that was cut. She lightly observed, “You’ve cut it short.”

Ye Jiacheng’s hair had always grown quickly. Yesterday, as his wife, she commented on her husband’s appearance, “Why is your hair so long? Won’t you tidy it up? Don’t tell me you haven’t cut it this whole year.”

Thus, when he had time today, Mr.Ye specifically went to get his hair cut.

Looking at this familiar handsome face, Shi Jian mostly felt her heart ache. Mr.Ye probably had a year full of hardship. He was someone who loved cleanliness. He had a rough year. Then, Ye Jiacheng noticed her staring at him. He unbelievingly touched his new hairstyle and asked her with a smile, “Is it short? It’s not very handsome?”

Shi Jian pursed her lip and continued to stare for a good while. She praised him generously, “Very handsome, still very handsome.”

As a survivor of the NE8904 aviation accident, a lot of media wanted to interview Shi Jian, but Mr.Ye declined all of them because he didn’t want them to be too interrupting.

He had lost and regained her, thus he especially treasured her. After she was awake, Shi Jian recovered very quickly, other than her memory being fuzzy when she first woke up. Now, she actively went through rehabilitation treatments with her doctor and Mr.Ye, in hopes of regaining her healthy body as she had before as soon as possible. She was like a plant that was about to wither away in the darkness. Now, it was as if she had returned to a place of sunshine and nutrients and her hope had been rekindled anew. Only when she was healthy could she properly appreciate the love, life, as well as her very, very long future that had returned to her.

She was not letting this opportunity go in vain.

Popo came to the hospital practically every day. After she had an accident, Popo basically lived in A-City. She was faced with Popo every day. As she watched Ye Jiacheng speak with Popo, Shi Jian’s eyes became slightly watery. She had her lover all over again, and Popo also never lost her son that she loved so much.

Shi Jian’s mood got better and she also interacted with her family more.

Popo said that she and Ye Jiacheng were a blessed couple. The heavens loved her and Ye Jiacheng. As Popo was speaking, Auntie Li brushed the tears away from the corner of her eyes and added, “Cheng Cheng is so in love that I think even the heavens are moved. Shi Jian woke up with no issues this time, and they will have endless fortune that will never be used up in the future.”

Really? Shi Jian drank her nutritious porridge and glanced at Mr.Ye at her bedside by habit. Often when she was faced with opinions from her family like this, Ye Jiacheng always smiled modestly and thanked them. In private, Jiacheng actually didn’t like when Aunty Li was too chatty like this. If he heard how Aunty Li said he was so in love, he would probably “heartlessly” interrupt her and tell her to stop. Shi Jian could understand his thinking on a basic level. As his wife of five years, and having spent ten years in a “dream”, Shi Jian’s feelings had deepened, and she understood him better. She not only understood the present Mr.Ye, but she also understood the Ye Jiacheng of the past.

At night, Mr.Ye was looking after her. Shi Jian cuddled up into her husband’s chest and gratefully said, “Jiacheng, thank you.” She thanked him for not giving up on her, as well as for never even thinking of giving up on her.

This NE8904 aviation accident was like the heavens putting the love between her and Mr.Ye to the test, as well as to make the past Shi Jian, who did not treasure the life she had, understand love and life better.

In his warm embrace, Ye Jiacheng lovingly caressed her spine and gently said, “Baby, thank you, too.”

Shi Jian looked up. Mr.Ye paused and interlocked their fingers together. Then he finished, “For continuing your life with me.”

The emotional and genuine words moved her. Shi Jian sucked in a breath from the bottom of her heart and delightedly said, “Jiacheng, I love you.” A confession of love had never needed her to pick a special occasion where she never experienced loss for her to know the value of what she kept. Or maybe she was still hiding something in her heart. Only, at this moment, the more important thing was that they didn’t continue to be together.

“Shi Jian……” Mr.Ye’s voice continued, “In this past year, I was really afraid…… I wasn’t scared because you wouldn’t wake up, but because you might have left me forever.”

Shi Jian knew what Mr.Ye meant by “afraid”. She put her hand on his chest. The heart inside was beating familiarly. Mr.Ye didn’t know, but she’d already experienced this feeling of parting forever. The endless despair once again spread into her heart. Shi Jian buried her face deep into his chest and didn’t speak for a long time.

The next day was another day of sunshine and good weather. Shi Jian was carried out into the sun by Mr.Ye. The ultraviolet rays could boost the restoration of the necrosis 1 in her body. Thus, as long as the weather was nice, Ye Jiacheng carried her outside for exercise each day.

It seemed that after she woke up, warm sunlight shone into her hospital room each day. Shi Jian had a thick blanket wrapped around her  outside of her hospital gown. She sat on a bench and watched the laughing little kids playing on the lawn. The bright sunlight seemed to run and jump along with them. It was extremely merry. Looking down, Shi Jian peered at the back of her hands. The light covered her skin, which was so pale she lost the color of blood running through her hands, in a layer of warm gloss, as if it could penetrate into her flesh, showing the strength of life.

A bony hand covered her own hands. Shi Jian looked towards the nearby man. Her body leaned slightly into Mr.Ye’s shoulder. She squinted her eyes and looked at the sky again. The afternoon sunlight in front of her was the most vivid in her memory. This year’s winter was also the warmest winter where she felt the most adequate amount of sunshine.

Only, this perfect beauty made her doubt whether it was truly real. What if it was another dream?

“Jiacheng……”

“En.”

“Husband”

“En.”

“Jiacheng……” Unsure, Shi Jian called out to him again. Ye Jiacheng continued to answer her, not minding it.

Shi Jian’s hospital life was very simple. Everyday, many people came to visit her, but Ye Jiacheng still controlled the visitation time. Her parents, Tim, and Popo came to A-City. They all came to see her once each day.

They watched, laughed, and were grateful. She didn’t lose her life in the aviation accident, and had safely woken up. She was undoubtedly a fortunate person. Her Gonggong, who was not a fan of revealing his emotions, expressed them with his eyes brimming with tears. This was not only fortunate for her; this was also fortunate for Jiacheng, and fortunate for both of their families.

It truly was fortunate. Shi Jian also believed this. In those ten years, she had complained, been angry, and been regretful. When that harmonious time turned into a dream in her memory, she only had a robust gratefulness left in her heart: being alive was nice, and having the people that she loved by her side was nice.

Shi Jian didn’t want to stay in the hospital anymore. Even if the hospital was extremely good and the service in her hospital room was extremely warm and considerate, it wasn’t even one percent close to the feeling of being at home. Moreover, she didn’t want to recall a “hospital memory” that she had in her heart. Her body signals were close to the point where she could be released from the hospital. As she was also impatient to leave, Mr.Ye also agreed that she could go home. But the head doctor still recommended she stay for observation and later begin mental and physical examinations. The doctor asked her opinion and she looked towards Ye Jiacheng.

Mr.Ye stood and squeezed her hand: “I’ll go speak with the doctor.”

The head doctor suggested she stay for observation not only because of her physical health. In the head doctor’s office, of course Ye Jiacheng knew what the doctor was worried about. He didn’t not discover that his wife had lost a serious sense of security, so much so that he felt his wife was hiding an even deeper feeling and secret inside. If this was true, it was more reason for him to not want Shi Jian to stay in the hospital.

He wanted to bring her back to ordinary life as a married couple as soon as possible, and have her forget the harm that the aviation accident caused.

The next day, Ye Jiacheng got all the arrangements done for her to be discharged. He also notified their family members. Three cars entered the hospital parking lot that perfectly fit two families of people inside. Shi Jian changed out of her hospital gown and put on a new coat. She also wore a new hat of the same color. After a while of physical therapy, she didn’t have much problem walking, but getting in and out of a car was still somewhat challenging. She walked to the hospital parking lot. Her body suddenly lightened. Ye Jiacheng had picked her up. Shi Jian naturally put her hands around her husband’s shoulders. She said in satisfaction, “I finally don’t need to smell the scent of sterilization spray anymore.”

Yes, she could finally go home. Mr.Ye tilted his head and said in front of the family as he gave her a kiss, “Time to go home! Wife.”

The two families accidentally saw this scene and all laughed. Mama Ye had a soft personality and looked slightly away. She brushed away the tears that threatened to spill. In the future, she just wished the two to be healthy and would no longer pressure them to have children.

After her daughter-in-law had the accident, Mama Ye watched her son and felt that the world really did have destined couples. In the past, no matter how much she pressured him, her son didn’t get married if he didn’t want to. She asked him why and there was no woman that moved him so much that he wanted to spend his life with her. Thus it definitely was not an easy path to marriage. After her husband’s brain tumor surgery, her son became more steady, and no longer easily dated others. As a mother, she became even more worried. But Mayor Ye, as his father, praised his son that his sense of responsibility had strengthened. Then the years passed one by one. Her son put the core of his heart into his architect career. Seeing other families already having grandsons, her heart was anxious, up until her son brought Shi Jian home. Say, wasn’t the reason she liked Shi Jian immediately was because her son had changed dramatically?

After their wedding, Jiacheng and Shi Jian did not disappoint her, other than on the topic of children. Because of her insistence, Jian-er even mentioned having a divorce with Jiacheng. Then, Jian-er had a miscarriage, and their marriage was faced with an even larger crisis.

Fortunately, the two of them had gotten through it together.

Then, Shi Jian had a plane accident, and she only finally safely left the hospital just now.

Mama Ye recalled that she had her son’s fortune read at a temple in the mountains. The master said that Jiacheng’s eight birthdate characters made him extremely intelligent and prosperous, but only when extremely terrible things happened, his life would turn around. Only after a great tragedy would he have happiness. As for marriage and whether his destiny was shallow or deep, it was completely reliant on his personal luck.

They were probably a destined couple that came around once in a hundred years.

The three cars followed after each other as they left the hospital. Shi Jian sat in the Q7 that Mr.Ye drove. Her eyes followed the city architecture outside the window. It looked somewhat similar. In front of them was the main intersection of A-City. Mr.Ye stopped at the traffic light. His left hand was on the steering wheel out of habit, and he turned to look at her.

The red light flickered. Shi Jian seemed to be swaying a bit.

On their right side was Qingshui Road and Ye Mao Real Estate’s headquarters. Even though the appearance was revamped, the familiar sight still punched her in the face.

Qingshui Road was a road lined with parasol trees. Each year during summer, it was covered in a dense canopy with many branches and luxuriant leaves. It looked like a painting during every season. For ten years, she had walked through this road when she got off work each day. She had waited for Ye Jiacheng here. She had looked up at the nearby skyscrapers here. She had worked here as Yi Pei’s assistant for many years. She was once again unconsciously drawn towards the chaos of the Yi family……

The years had flown by like wind whistling by her ear. Shi Jian turned her head back and pressed the button to lower the car window.

Nearby, a black Mercedes with the license plate 06 turned into Yi Mao headquarters from the opposite direction. The sleek car body was low profile and steady, steady like the man inside the car, who was currently looking at a photo on his phone silently.

Many netizens were enthusiastic. Thus, before she left the hospital, Shi Jian specifically logged into her “BigYeSmallYeLittleYe” Weibo account and posted an update with “thanks everyone” to ease the worries of those unfamiliar friends.

Other than text, she also attached a photo. It was a picture that Mr.Ye helped take of her sitting on the lawn outside of her hospital room. The camera faced the sunshine, which made her complexion look pretty good.

In the car, Shi Jian went through all of the warm comments that the netizens left. When she saw amusing ones, she read them out loud to Mr.Ye. Mr.Ye’s bar of finding things funny seemed to have lowered. He occasionally chuckled aloud. She recalled how when they encountered humorous things in the past, she seemed to always be the one laughing uncontrollably, while Mr.Ye asked in confusion next to her: “What’s so funny about that?”

She turned and silently watched Mr.Ye drive. The thirty-five year old Ye Jiacheng. She looked from his eyebrows to the corner of his lips. Shi Jian increasingly felt like she had just dreamed for a long time. Only, if it was only a dream, why did she still have a feeling that she had travelled to a parallel universe? It was as if there was still a voice in the bottom of her heart that said: little fox, trust me, everything can return to the way it was.

Now, everything had returned, hadn’t it?

All the way to their home in A-City.

There was practically no change at Tianmei Jia Park, including those two pairs of slippers, one blue and one pink, on their shoe rack in their home. What was different was that she no longer had to guard her house alone. Timidly stepping in, Shi Jian let Mr.Ye lead her inside, their two hands tightly interlocked together.

Nearing the evening, the two families made dinner together, then surrounded the dinner table rowdily. They all celebrated for her and Jiacheng with their wine glasses.

For a happy united family, happiness, and good health.

“Jiefu.” Nearby, a tall and lanky Tim had a polaroid camera in his hands and asked the male protagonist here, “I just took a few pictures. They’re all pretty good. Where is your photo album? I’ll leave them for you and my big sis.”

Mr.Ye smiled and replied, “On the right side of the second cabinet in the study. Look for it.”

At night, Shi Jian leaned against the headboard as she flipped through the polaroids Tim had taped into the photo album.

Tim had taped tonight’s photos into an old, half-filled photo album. This was an old-fashioned European style photo album. There was an image of a lighthouse with a yellow glow printed on a yellow background on the cover. She recalled a short while after she and Mr.Ye started dating, Mr.Ye had swindled a baby photo off of her and in return, he gave her an album of photos from when he was a child. He’d even made a “transaction deal”. She remembered that the first time she went to meet Gonggong and Popo at the Ye household, Popo wanted to find this album and show it to her. Unexpectedly, Ye Jiacheng had already given her his album of “personal photos”.

These memories of past events were vivid. Her heart unconsciously became soft and moist. Shi Jian’s attention left this album. As she flipped through the old photos, her gaze gently landed on an old photo with a beautiful background.

There was even a record written in small characters below it. It was taken by Ye Jiacheng in the midsummer of 2006.

The man had picturesque eyebrows. He sat on a red golf cart. The lawn was green, the sky was blue, and he wore a white cap…… Popo said this photo was taken when Ye Jiacheng went golfing with Gonggong. At the time, Ye Jiacheng had just entered his career after earning his master’s degree. He was in his prime.

Yes, the twenty-five year old Ye Jiacheng had still not made his name yet and was energetic and lively.

Necrosis: the dictionary tells me that 坏死 means necrosis, but that is more like complete cell death. The author may mean something like ‘muscle atrophy’, which would make more sense in this context.
