See You Again (Time Already Knows) - Chapter 54

Chapter 54 - Was He Going To Break Up With The Little Fox?

Ugh.

Shi Jian was suffering so much that her head spun and eyes watered. She didn’t even have the energy to speak.

Tim came upstairs to keep her company. He moved a wooden stool by her bed to sit on. Who knew what drama he’d learned this from, but he also brought a warm towel to use as a heat compress. Then, he gazed at her like a little angel.

Jane, are you alright?” Tim asked her.

“I feel much better.” Shi Jian had her head on a soft pillow. She touched the towel on her forehead and said to Tim, “You don’t need to stay here. Go downstairs and play with firecrackers.”

Tim shook his head, not planning to leave.

Shi Jian smiled for a moment: “Then give me a kiss. It’ll be better if I get a kiss.”

Tim nodded, then stooped down and gave her a kiss on the cheek. It was soft and gentle. Shi Jian touched Tim’s snowy cheeks. Her heart warmed and melted into a puddle.

Love was gentle, but it was also powerful, no?

After Tim went downstairs, Shi Jian got up. She leaned against her headboard and composed a text message. She had planned to seriously write a text. She went back and forth, not knowing what to say. Then, she was just left with:

“Happy New Year. You went back home, right? I want to say something to you. Give me a call when you have some time. ——A little fox who’s thinking of you.”

The last part was added on forcibly by Shi Jian. Being husband and wife was when they quarreled and reconciled quickly after. So what if Ye Jiacheng didn’t love her enough? She would just give him a little more love, then.

After the text was composed, Shi Jian tapped the send button twice and subconscious felt that something wasn’t right. Then she squinted her reddened eyes and stared at the tiny phone screen. She watched as the text was sent out like little snowflakes. Her whole body went stiff as a rock. How did she manage to send it to a whole group……?

Promptly, she pressed the cancel key. What’s going on?! It must’ve been because she was sending New Year’s wishes to a whole group before, in addition to her brain being a bit muddled, that she hadn’t changed it back. She’d just sent the text that was originally meant for Ye Jiacheng to a whole group of people…… Shi Jian wished she could shut off her cellphone, bury her face in her pillow, and just die.

Luckily, her reaction was still pretty quick and only five or six texts were sent. But, one of them seemed to include…… Yi Pei.

Yi Pei……

Yi Pei…… Oh no!

At making such an inexplicable mistake, the feeling of being hurt had disappeared. Shi Jian was left with a valiant wish to be run over by a car. It turned out the best way to get over having hurt feelings was to greatly embarrass yourself…… Don’t even ask whether she was still thinking of that scoundrel Ye Jiacheng anymore, even her fever was gone.

Indeed, she was cured, clear-headed, and relaxed!

Afterwards, Ye Jiacheng was completely thrown into the back of her mind, because she received calls one after the other. Shi Jian braced herself as she answered each one, making up the common story that she’d been playing truth or dare.

It was New Year’s Eve; everyone understood these party games well.

Until Yi Pei called.

Taking a deep breath, Shi Jian answered the call. Before Yi Pei even spoke, she apologized first: “Apologies, President Yi. I sent the text message mistakenly.”

She couldn’t risk telling Yi Pei that she was playing truth or dare. Only an idiot of an intern would play with her boss’s head on the line. Boo hoo hoo, Yi Pe probably wouldn’t mind, right? Shi Jian felt her hands tremble when she answered the call.

Across the phone, Yi Pei was silent for a moment. An announcement notifying the start of boarding for a plane to Hong Kong could be heard faintly in the background. Yi Pei was going to Hong Kong on New Year’s Eve?

Shi Jian felt even more apologetic. Yi Pei was so busy, but still called after seeing that mistakenly sent text message.

“Sorry, President Yi,” Shi Jian apologized again.

“No problem. I thought as much.” Yi Pei spoke, seeming to also let out a chuckle. He continued, “You probably just sent the wrong information.”

Shi Jian was mortified: “……”

“Happy New Year, Shi Jian.” Yi Pei softly drawled. His cheerful enough voice cleared away her embarrassment.

“Happy New Year, President Yi.” Shi Jian hurriedly returned the New Year’s blessing, then asked out of politeness, “President Yi, are you at an airport right now?”

“Yes, I am getting on the plane in a bit.” Yi Pei said, then added, “I’m celebrating the New Year in Hong Kong.”

Why did he have to go to Hong Kong to celebrate the New Year…… Shi Jian didn’t ask. She smoothly said, “Then I will hang up now, you catch your flight first. I’m truly sorry to have bothered you.”

“No problem.”

Yi Pei ended the call himself, even though he was somewhat unwilling to part with the voice by his ear. He almost had some kind of vexing feeling in his heart. If he hadn’t mentioned that he would be boarding a plane soon, then they might’ve been able to chat for a little bit longer.

Looking at the mistakenly sent text message in his cellphone again, Yi Pei pressed the delete button.

It didn’t belong to him, so he would stop thinking about it. He originally thought that if she was also willing, after everything settled down, he would give her everything that she wanted. In the end, he had too many misgivings. He was the only one at fault; he couldn’t get his feelings across. What was there to complain about? Shi Jian was a nice girl. She deserved to have a romantic relationship that was hers in her best years.

Actually, there was no need for her to be with him, such a boring person as he was. Other than eating, working, and sleeping, he couldn’t think of anything else that two people could do together.

And when he got too busy sometimes, he probably might not even have the time to eat with her.

Even with this, he was jealous. Jealous of another man. Jealous that he received her love and her thoughts. Ye Jiacheng was it? The person she was supposed to send it to was probably Ye Jiacheng.

This lucky man, Ye Jiacheng, had caught a cold. From the day after Valentine’s Day until now, he still hadn’t gotten better. His throat was still inflamed. Ye Jiacheng, who seldom wanted to relax, slept by himself for three days and three nights. However, Papa Ye was so busy over the New Year that he had no free time. Guests arrived at their house one after the other. He helped receive them all day.

He didn’t know where these rowdy friends and family came from, but every year they found an opportunity to come visit. His mother’s personality was warm and welcoming. Even after being the mayor’s wife for more than ten years, she still hadn’t learned how to feign civility towards guests yet.

It was up to him to socialize as well as evade them. He left a lot of room for error, and it was unsuitable to be proud of oneself in this situation.

Ye Jiacheng had learned from the group of uncles how to flawlessly evade when he was a small child. He didn’t like these kinds of pleasantries, but everyone liked to eat it up.

Just like how he couldn’t listen to any more flattery. He’d heard it many times and got used to it. More overstated praise was just the wind blowing by his ear. This world originally was simply unfair. Some people were high up top, others judged appearances, some were endlessly fortunate, and others had rotten luck their whole lives. “Don’t forget your original heart” was a saying that Mayor Ye always taught him. Ye Jiacheng had also always wanted to remember it; it was just that people’s hearts easily changed. The most important thing was actually to maintain a clear-headed soberness at all times, and be clear on what one wanted to accomplish at present.

On the New Year, Ye Jiacheng did not buy new clothes. He still wore the coat that he’d bought at Yi Mao last time. Mama Ye wanted her son to wear something more cheerful, and not wear black or grey all the time. Ye Jiacheng helplessly changed into a maroon cable knit sweater that Mama Ye had just finished knitting. Ye Jiacheng thought it was childish, even though everyone who saw him wearing it said he looked good.

It was indeed good looking. If Shi Jian saw this, her face would definitely light up, then she would exclaim inside her heart: “My husband is the most handsome.”

There were two space heaters in the Ye family’s old fashioned living room. A flush mounted lightbulb shroud covered a white light. Ye Jiacheng wore his maroon sweater paired with black pants. In addition to his hair that he’d just done for Valentine’s Day, his whole person looked exquisite and beautiful. A middle-aged auntie said: “Our Cheng Cheng is really getting more and more handsome. Handsome like a groom.”

Ye Jiacheng forced out a laugh, immediately losing even the will to reply. He was sensitive to the word “groom”. The auntie was still being lively. She said as she held his hand: “Your mom says you don’t have a girlfriend yet. I have a girl that just returned from studying abroad. She is very beautiful……”

Every year during the holidays, the amount of people who tried to introduce girls to him could form a line stretching across the Linwan Bridge in Qinglin City.

Ye Jiacheng courteously rejected the auntie: “I have a girlfriend already.”

“Ah? You have a girlfriend already?” the auntie turned and asked Mama Ye. Mama Ye was peeling a pear. She looked at Ye Jiacheng with the same surprise on her face. Then she joyfully asked: “Which young lady is it? Is it that Ms.Shi from last time?”

Mama Ye questioned him. Ye Jiacheng didn’t feel like replying. His original statement was also an evasion, but he said it before thinking about it.

The auntie spoke again: “Didn’t I just say our Cheng Cheng was handsome and elegant, and that there was no way he didn’t have a girlfriend? When are you bringing her over so we can meet her? How nice would it be to bring her over for the New Year?”

See, once he said that aloud, the situation immediately became more annoying and complex. Ye Jiacheng expressed that he was tired and went upstairs to rest.

In his room, Ye Jiacheng had his hands behind his head. He laughed mockingly at himself. He didn’t know what he was thinking. Some moods were worse than whenever a relationship was about to fall apart, which annoyed him, but some moods in past relationships could be summed up in his experience. It seemed to be time to break up again.

Was he going to break up with the little fox?

From when they met until they were dating, as well as after Valentine’s Day, it seemed that he hadn’t seriously analyzed his feelings towards the little fox. The little fox was like a riddle. He had developed a deep interest for her. Occasionally, he would think about how to investigate her, understand her, but he never seriously thought about his feelings towards her.

Actually, he was used to overlooking this question with each of his past relationships. Relationships were just like that. You push, I pull, and when there’s no meaning anymore, we parted with no hard feelings.

He was certain that he liked the little fox. He was occasionally attracted, and occasionally provoked. She was attracting him; he also thought of ways to attract her. The push and pull felt intense. Furthermore, he was infatuated with the little fox’s body.

Did the little fox like him? Probably. It was much more than like. If he had doubted the little fox’s feelings before, he would have been able to feel falseness after they started dating. The little fox’s love for him was much stronger than he’d thought. It was surging, and difficult to describe in words and impossible to suppress.

This kind of love wouldn’t be without reason.

He didn’t know what the little fox was looking for in him, but he was certain that he didn’t have it. He didn’t have the kind of love that she wanted. He would repay her the same way.

Thinking this, Ye Jiacheng felt that everything seemed to lose all meaning.

The little fox liked him so much. If only the little fox didn’t like him so much.

Thinking, he couldn’t go on with this relationship much longer anyway.

Only, he would probably feel upset for a long time after breaking up, right?

He still hated to part with such a good little fox, no matter if it was just a man’s selfishness or if he was being genuine.

After the New Year, Shi Jian was faintly aware of an issue. Ye Jiacheng might be about to break up with her. This Spring Festival went from sending that text, to her parents returning and interrogating her about her boyfriend.

Every day, she was faced with things that stoked anxiety.

Ye Jiacheng was going to dump her again?!

Shi Jian already could not describe her emotions. She had given Ye Jiacheng a call. She had pretended that nothing was wrong as she chatted with him. She specifically said some fun and pleasant things to attract him. She was nervous and restless. Pretending made her tired and powerless.

Then, she heard Ye Jiacheng tell her: “Shi Jian, let’s cool down for now.”

Shi Jian hung up the phone. If only Ye Jiacheng was just a little bit dumber. Not so clever. Not able to tell that she was pretending over the phone.

Not cute at all in such a precarious moment.

In the past, she and Mr.Ye had discussed the question of who loved whom more. Mr.Ye confidently said: “No question, I definitely love you more.” She wasn’t convinced: “You feel that I don’t love you as much?” As they discussed, she even said angrily: “Since you feel that I don’t like you as much, why do you still like me so much?”

Then Mr.Ye laughed delightedly: “Shi Jian, I just like how you love me. Not too much, because I like how you love me so casually, yet arrogantly.”

Only, loving someone needed the other person to reciprocate. The Mr.Ye that used to love her, indulge her, and dote on her was gone. Where did she have to go to find the Shi Jian that loved casually yet arrogantly?

Shi Jian felt upset, but still decided to bear it and not bother Ye Jiacheng.

Luckily, she still had things to do.

After the Spring Festival, Shi Jian was busy interning and graduating. Ye Jiacheng was also very busy. Even though she had heard from Gao Yanfei, Gao Yanfei hadn’t told her what he was busy with.

Until she heard about something from Zhang Kai.

Ye Jiacheng had transformed in an instant. He had turned from Architect Ye to President Ye. He established a real estate company called “Ye Mao Real Estate”.

“Shi Jian, what’s wrong?” Zhang Kai came to congratulate her.

Nothing, she was only nearly angered to death by Ye Jiacheng. Shi Jian was flopped on her desk, saying nothing at all. Then, she put a hand on her stomach, trying to calm her rapidly weakening heart.

Ye Mao Real Estate! How impressive……

Author’s Note:

Mr.Ye, are you intending to compete with President Yi? They are Yi Mao, you are Ye Mao……

Ye Jiacheng: Pardon me, I am intending to branch out and grow.

TN: **PLEASE READ**

I am now realizing maybe I should’ve just stuck with “President Yi” instead of “Vice President Yi”. Ye Jiacheng and Yi Pei now have the same title, which is CEO/President. …I thought Yi Mao Real Estate was still a branch under Forefather Yi’s conglomerate, which was my original thinking when I translated Yi Pei’s title…… Would you all like me to change Vice President Yi’s title to “President Yi”? I could also change them both to “CEO Yi” and “CEO Ye” but I don’t think that sounds as good.

If there are no opinions, then I will most likely edit “Vice President Yi” to “President Yi”.

……I am really not well versed in business ๐Ÿ˜“
